Our Spotlight Solo Artists for the month of November 2022 are New York artists Suzanne Parker & Sandra Nystrom with an exhibition titled Parallel Lives.
Sandra Nystrom and Suzanne Parker met many years ago on a steep scenic winding road in Shady, New York, where they both had weekend houses. Each had begun their careers in textile design, and later branched out to other professional endeavors, all the while raising their families and attempting to squeeze in time to make art. As professional responsibilities wound down and their children left the nest, they chose to leave the city behind, making their formerly second homes their full-time addresses.
They reconnected on their road in Shady and in their art. Nystrom established her Shady studio and was entering shows in New York and the Hudson Valley. Parker, by then a restaurant critic in Queens, repaired to her mountain retreat a little later and quickly got involved in the local art scene and not-for-profit arts organizations.
Simultaneously, they experienced the pandemic lockdown, and the days of uncertainty and confusion that ensued. As their lives mirrored each other, their art diverged. Nystrom paints lyrical abstractions in colors sometimes muted and other times turbulent with implied references to nature. Parker creates edgy 2D and 3D mixed media works with elements of whimsy.
Their art is an expression of their personas and the lives they have created, nestled in the panorama of the Catskills, and confronted by the unsettling times in which we all live.
Recent events have provoked an exodus of city folk to the greater Kingston area. Nystrom and Parker left their city lives to pursue their art on a Woodstock mountain. Their story will resonate with others who’ve made or contemplate the same transition.

Suzanne Parker y Sandra Nystrom: Vidas Paralelas
Sandra Nystrom y Suzanne Parker se conocieron hace años en una carretera panorámica y tortuosa en Shady, Nueva York, donde ambas tenían casas de fin de semana. Ambas habían comenzado su carrera en el diseño textil, y más tarde se orientaron hacia otras actividades profesionales, al mismo tiempo que criaban a sus familias e intentaban buscar tiempo para hacer arte. A medida que las responsabilidades profesionales disminuían y sus hijos abandonaban el nido, decidieron dejar atrás la ciudad, convirtiendo sus previas segundas residencias en domicilios de tiempo completo.
Se reencontraron en su camino en Shady y en su arte. Nystrom estableció su estudio en Shady y participó en exposiciones en Nueva York y el Valle del Hudson.
