Our Spotlight Solo Artist for the month of February is Natalie Fisk, with her iterative exhibition titled Stop, Listen.
Natalie Fisk is a Mexican American artist living and working in the Hudson Valley. She received her BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2011, has attended the Vermont Studio Center Residency, and has been showing her work nationally for over 15 years. She has been mentioned in the New York Times, Hyperallergic, and Bushwick Daily.
Fisk makes sculptures, drawings, and paintings that utilize the symbol of Papel Picado to draw attention to the experiences that have marked her life. Papel Picado, a decorative craft made by cutting elaborate designs into sheets of tissue paper, are used for joyous celebrations but carry an inherent violence because of the cutting or carving required for their creation. This metaphor allows Fisk to engage in various personal dialogues; about the grief she feels over the self-erasure of her culture required to exist within white spaces, the loss of a pregnancy, and loss of identity due to perfection anxiety.
The works begin as a set of loose drawings with a plea to the viewer to stop and listen. From there stencils are made that are then used to create Papel Picado. This is then photographed with the intention of pulling darkness into the frame through the use of shadow. From these photos mixed media drawings, watercolors, and acrylic paintings are created. Each material provides a unique perspective into a subconscious reckoning between how to celebrate joy within Grief.

Fisk hace esculturas, dibujos y pinturas que utilizan la tecnica
de Papel Picado para llamar la atención sobre las vivencias que han marcado su vida. Papel Picado, es una artesanía decorativa basada en cortar diseños elaborados en láminas de papel entretejido, se utilizan para celebraciones alegres, pero conllevan una violencia inherente debido a el corte o tallado que se requiere para su creación. Esta metáfora permite a Fisk participar en varios diálogos personales; sobre el dolor que siente por sí misma al ir borrando su cultura necesaria para existir dentro de los espacios en blanco, la pérdida de un embarazo y pérdida de identidad debido a la ansiedad de perfección.
Las obras comienzan como un conjunto de dibujos sueltos con una súplica al espectador para que se detenga y escuche. A partir de ahí se hacen plantillas que luego se utilizan para crear Papel Picado. Esto luego se fotografía con la intención de atraer oscuridad al marco. mediante el uso de la sombra. A partir
de estas fotos, se hacen dibujos de técnica mixta, Se crean acuarelas y pinturas acrílicas. Cada material proporciona una única perspectiva en un ajuste de cuentas subconsciente entre cómo celebrar la alegría dentro dolor.
