Our Spotlight Artists for the month of August are mother-son due Nancy and Jon Campbell, with an exhibition titled Campbell+Campbell, Recent Paintings.
Jon Campbell was born in 1982 in Kingston, NY and has been drawing for as long as he can remember. He studied at the Woodstock School of Art (1998 – 2005), the School of Visual Arts (2001-2002) and received his B.F.A. in 2006 from SUNY Purchase (2004 – 2006). Jon relocated to Berlin, Germany in May of 2007 and has been living and working there since. His paintings have been exhibited internationally and are in numerous private collections.
“Some of my earliest memories are of watching my mother paint with watercolors. This gave me a strong grasp of the mechanics of painting at a very early age. I remember laying in the hallway of our home for what felt like hours, getting lost in a poster of Gaugin’s Barbaric Tales or of the 1984 Van Gogh in Arles exhibition at the Met which hung in my bedroom.”
“Today, plein air painting lies at the core of my practice as an artist. It re-centers and re-calibrates me creatively. To me painting is like peeling away layers of whatever I think I know about what I’m looking at – definitions, spacial parameters, etc. – in order to see the world as I did in those earliest memories.”

Born in Brooklyn, NY June 13 1952, Nancy Campbell grew up in Saugerties, NY. She lives in the Village of Saugerties with her husband Michael, where she maintains her art studio. She was former proprietor of the Half Moon Studio Art Gallery in the Village of Saugerties. Nancy has organized workshops in Italy, primarily in Lazio, since 2012. Nancy and Michael have 3 grown sons and a granddaughter who live near and far…in Berlin, Salt Lake City, and Jamaica, Vermont.

“Algunos de mis primeros recuerdos son ver a mi madre pintar con acuarelas. Esto me hizo comprender la mecánica de la pintura a una edad muy temprana. Recuerdo pasar lo que parecían horas recostado en el pasillo de nuestra casa, perdido en un póster de los Cuentos bárbaros de Gaugin o de la exposición de Van Gogh en Arles de 1984 en el Met que se encontraba en mi habitación.”
“Hoy en día, la pintura al aire libre se encuentra en el centro de mi práctica como artista. Me permite volver a centrarme y me recalibra creativamente. Para mí, pintar es como ir quitando las capas de lo que creo que sé sobre lo que estoy viendo –definiciones, parámetros espaciales, etc.- para poder ver el mundo como lo hacía en esos primeros recuerdos.”

Nacida en Brooklyn, Nueva York, el 13 de junio de 1952, Nancy Campbell creció en Saugerties, Nueva York. Vive en el pueblo de Saugerties con su esposo Michael, donde tiene su estudio de arte. Fue propietaria de la galería de arte Half Moon Studio en el pueblo de Saugerties. Nancy ha organizado talleres en Italia, principalmente en la región del Lacio, desde el 2012.
