Call for Art: EXPLORE BOUNDARIES

Experimental Exhibition: Artist, Wayne Montecalvo, to Curate!

Exhibition Dates: April 4 – April 26
Call for Art Closes: February 8 @ 11:59 PM

Overview

Explore Boundaries is an experimental exhibition inviting artists to investigate boundaries in their many forms—from spacial and material to social, and political limits. Artists are encouraged to think unconventionally and submit abstract work created within the past few years.

This exhibition welcomes expansive interpretations that question what separates us, what connects us, and where limits are tested, dissolved, or redefined.

What We’re Looking For:

Artists are invited to submit abstract work that explores “boundaries” in their world, including but not limited to:

  • Spatial, material, or conceptual limits
  • Self-imposed or internal boundaries
  • Societal, cultural, or political borders
  • Emotional thresholds or psychological edges

Interpretations may include setting or breaking boundaries, redefining limits, or examining what connects or separates us.

Media

Open to a wide range of media, including:

  • Painting
  • Sculpture / 3D
  • Photography (nude photography not accepted at this time.)
  • Mixed media

Experimental approaches are strongly encouraged.

Wayne Montecalvo is a multidisciplinary artist working across mixed media, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video, and installation. His practice explores perception, material transformation, and the physical and conceptual boundaries of image-making, often foregrounding process as a generative force. Through layered surfaces, repetition, and experimental use of materials, Montecalvo investigates how images are constructed, disrupted, and re-read over time.

Montecalvo has received numerous awards and residencies, including the Awagami Artist-in-Residence Program at Awagami Paper Factory in Tokushima, Japan; NYFA MARK ’09; two full fellowship residencies at the Vermont Studio Center; residencies at the Frans Masereel Centrum voor Grafiek in Kasterlee, Belgium; the John Michael Kohler Foundation Arts/Industry Residency in Sheboygan, Wisconsin; a Women’s Studio Workshop Artist Fellowship; Artists at Work (New York State Council on the Arts); and an artist residency at Cill Rialaig in Ballinskelligs, County Kerry, Ireland.

His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions at venues including Kingston Museum of Contemporary Art, Awagami Paper Factory (Japan), Kingston Artists Collective, Center for Photography at Woodstock, Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, Albany Center Gallery, Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, Torpedo Factory Art Center, Jane Street Art Center, A Smith Gallery (Texas), Julie Heller Gallery (Provincetown), and Women’s Studio Workshop. Recent exhibitions include Free for All at the Center for Photography at Woodstock (2025), A Legacy of Making, Part II at Regis College (2025), and multiple group exhibitions throughout the Hudson Valley and New England.

Montecalvo lives and works in the Hudson Valley, where he continues to develop work that bridges experimental image-making with material investigation and performative approaches to visual art
