Cari Marvelli
Director
she/her
Cari's work as a photographer began as a teenager living in Reno, Nevada. Her first job was as co- publisher of a hardcore punk fanzine called Media Massacre, which captured the raw energy of the local scene. Cari got her first job as an actor in Gary Elam’s film American Leather, which then led to her involvement in the local theater scene. After a couple of years of performing ‘au naturel,’ Cari decided to move to San Francisco to receive formal classical theater training at the Bennett Theater Lab. She then moved to the East Village where she pounded the pavement for acting gigs while working as a waitress in a cocktail bar.
Cari moved to Kingston in 2001 and began focusing on screenwriting and filmmaking. In 2009, her short film man’aise was a selection at Mockfest in Hollywood where she won a ‘Mocky’ for best actress in a drama. Many of her early photos have since been published in print (Straight Edge by Tony Rettman, 2017; Untypical Girls by Sam Knee, 2017), and were part of a 2015 retrospective exhibit called Skeeno in Black & White & Words at the Holland Project in Reno. Currently, Cari uses original photographs to create digital collage pieces she refers to as “repurposed,” and is dabbling in encaustic work. Her vision for the Kingston art scene aligns well with those of ASK; inclusivity, with a focus on promoting local artists.
